AFGHANCUP2009 The 12th annual Afghan Cup celebration is scheduled from 10th to July 12th, 2009. It is the biggest Afghan sporting and cultural event outside of Afghanistan, gathering hundreds of Afghan athelets, families and thousands of spectators from across North America, Europe, Asia and Afghanistan.The games take place in Howison Park in Prince William County Virginia, Hoop Magic Sportscomplex in Fairfax County Virginia and the Championship games to be held in Maryland Soccerplex Stadium.

All-Star Basketball Team Finishes an Impressive 3rd in the Asian Invitational Tournament - Feb. 16th, 2009
Afghan Basketball League’s All-Star team participated in the 1st Annual Asian Invitational Tournament, in Washington DC. 12 Teams participated, representing 12 different Asian countries. ABL’s All-Star team finished an impressive 3rd in the tournament, loosing a close semi-final game to the tournament Champions, an All-Star Korean squad. Afghan Basketball League’s All-Star team will participate in many other regional and national tournaments in the coming months. Congratulations to the players participated!

ANBF Tournaments Being Held in Kabul and Herat Afghanistan - Ghous Nikbeen April 22, 2009
Afghanistan National Basketball Federation (ANBF) is holding a tournament in the NOC gymnasium in Kabul Afghanistan on May 1st, 2009. The goal of this competition is the selection of the best players from Kabul teams. There would be 6 teams competing in this tournament from which 18 players would be chosen for the Kabul Select Team. Another youth tournament for players under 16 was held last week in the city of Herat where 12 teams participated in the event. Mr. Ghous Nikbeen, the General Secretary of ANBF said, “I am very hopeful for the future of Afghan basketball and with the help of friends like Afghan Sports Federation (ASF), we are very optimistic in developing the Afghan basketball program.”

Afghans win Homeless World Cup - December 7th, 2008
In front of 5,000 screaming fans in Australia today, Afghanistan won the Homeless World Cup by outscoring Russia in the final game with a score of 5-4. The Homeless World Cup, a brainchild of Scottish entrepreneur Mel Young, is an annual, international football (soccer) tournament. Currently it is in its sixth year. Some 500 players representing 56 nations participated this year. According to the tournament's official website, the goal of the tournament is to unite "teams of people who are homeless and excluded to take a once in a lifetime opportunity to represent their country and change their lives forever." Afghans another step closer to the 2011 Cricket World Cup -

Afghanistan defeated Hong Kong today and got their fifth consecutive win in the World Cricket League Division Four games. Hong Kong is now 4 and 1. The top two finishers of this division will move on to a six-team World Cricket League Division 3 in Argentina in January 2009. After that, the top two teams will join 10 more countries in the United Arab Emirates to play off for four berths in the 2011 World Cup. The World Cup will be jointly hosted by Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka. Allah Daad Noori, Afghanistan's Cricket Federation President has been very supportive of the team. After their win over Fiji on October 5th, he called the team to congratulate them and give each player $200 US.
Afghan Paralympics team off to Beijing

Afghanistan's five member Paralympics delegation left for China today in order to participate in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics games. The Paralympics are elite sport events for athletes from six different disability groups. The Paralympics are usually held after the Olympics and so this year, it will be from September 6th to September 15th. The Paralympic Games are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The official sponsor of this year's Afghan Paralympics delegation is the Alokozay Foundation.
