Hosts Vietnam defeated inexperienced Afghanistan 2-0 in an Olympic qualifying match in Vietnam's northern Nam Dinh province on Wednesday.

Vietnamese striker Phuc Hiep scored the opening goal with a left-foot volley from close range in the 34th minute.

Just a minute into the second half, Vu Phong latched onto a short pass before driving the ball into the empty net, sealing the 2-0 victory for his team.

After the match, Austrian coach of the Vietnamese team, Alfred Riedl, said he was satisfied with the result, noting that his team had not known anything about the Afghanistan Olympic squad before the match and Vietnamese players outdid their opponents.

The Vietnamese team is ready to clash with other teams, hoping to get good results, he added.
